There are 36 different roles for crew members on Hōkūle‘a and Hikianalia. We all need to learn to work together as a team and share these various roles and responsibilities to reach the destination we seek safely. Click here to learn more. (pdf)
Each crew member is allotted 0.8 gallons of fresh water per day. We realize that water is a very precious resource, and therefore we take showers and wash dishes with ocean water.
We divide the crew into a 4-hour watch system. The schedule is from 6:00 to 10:00 am, 10:00 am to 2:00 pm, and 2:00 – 6:00 pm. Then we repeat the watch schedule for the night time. Depending on the weather, the captain may decide to add more crew to each watch or bring everyone on deck to help.
The navigator needs to stay awake for about 22 hours per day for up to 30 days. The navigator takes short naps for about 15-20 minutes throughout the day.
